5-Day Roadtrip through Banff National Park & the Canadian Rockies

In July 2025, I spent 5 days road-tripping through Banff National Park and the Canadian Rockies, and it was every bit as beautiful as I imagined. From the bright turquoise waters of Lake Louise to sunrise at Peyto Lake, scenic mountain drives, and little stops along the way, this trip was the perfect mix of adventure and slow travel.

I put together this guide to share exactly how we spent our 5 days, along with some of my favorite places we visited and the things I learned along the way.

The Highlights

  • Flew into Calgary (YCC) and enjoyed the day exploring Calgary

  • Rented a car and made our way to Banff for a lovely afternoon and evening exploring & hiking in downtown Banff

  • Drove to Lake Louise where we canoed on the crystal blue waters & enjoyed the quiet, peaceful surroundings

  • Woke up before the sun to watch the sunrise over Peyto Lake until we headed back to Banff for more exploring

  • Spent our last morning enjoying the cafes and markets in Banff before heading back to Calgary for our flight home

A Few Things I Wish I Knew Before Going

One of my biggest takeaways from this trip? Start early! The most popular places can get incredibly busy, and some experiences and parking areas require advance planning. Starting your day early meant fewer crowds, easier parking, and some pretty magical moments—like seeing Peyto Lake at sunrise with hardly anyone around.

I also learned that a little planning goes a long way. Reserve popular experiences ahead of time, research parking and shuttle options, and download anything you'll need before you hit the road. Cell service can be spotty, and you don't want to be searching for directions or your favorite playlist when you're surrounded by mountains and no signal.

But perhaps my favorite part of the trip was simply enjoying the drive. The Canadian Rockies are the kind of place where the journey really is part of the experience. Leave room in your itinerary for scenic pull-offs, unexpected views, and those moments when you just have to stop the car and take it all in.
